What is Hyperextension & Hyperflexion?
Hyperextension and Hyperflexion of the spine occurs when the unsupported head is violently moved rapidly backwards and forwards. This type of injury is similar to whiplash but has more severe, long term implications for those involved. Not only is there a risk of damaging the upper spinal column with pressure at it’s peak, but also the motion could result in a brain injury also.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of these two injuries include varying degrees of pain. Usually, the less severe pain is referred to as whiplash. The more severe the motion, the harsher the effects and lasting pain. The back may experience sharp or dull, throbbing pains for an extended period of time following the accident leading to issues with neck and back movement. You may suffer from stiffness of the neck and upper back region making normal movement difficult and extremely painful. There may also be swelling around the affected area.
What are the causes?
Hypertension & Hyperflexion can occur from a result of:
- Sudden force pushing and pulling the neck backwards and forwards such as a car accident. This may affect people wearing lap seatbelts worse
- Doing activities that require hard physical contact if proper personal protective equipment or rules to avoid this type of injury aren’t in place
- In very young children it is very easy to cause this pain. It has been found to occur in cases of shaking of children
These are just a few of the causes of Hypertension and Hyperflexion. An injury such as this can cause unnecessary costs, prolonged medical treatment and harsh physical strain. That’s why at Sincere Law we aim to help get your life back on track and strive for justice for your injury.
How long does it take to recover?
Time taken to recover from Hypertension and Hyperflexion can differ depending on severity of the injury and complications that may have occurred. Extended time off work may be required due to difficulties with neck movement or in the worst cases the inability to perform any physical activity while working. A prolonged course of physiotherapy and medical treatment may be required to make a full recovery from this type of injury. It is possible that the damage may impair some of the spinal column and reduce movement in the back, affecting a person’s entire life. This sort of complication could cause the need to make alterations to the home and lifestyle of an affected person. Dependant on the type of incident that caused the injury, there may be mental scarring that would require ongoing counselling to help with the healing process. We will strive to cover all aftercare service costs in your claim, both physical and psychological.
